The past doesn't always stay in the past.

You may understand what happened to you and still notice it showing up in your relationships, reactions, decisions, or sense of yourself.

Therapy isn't about spending every session looking backward. We figure out what's happening now and what would actually help.

Complex Trauma in Adulthood

What happened then can show up in what's happening now.

Conflict feels bigger than it should. You shut down when you want to speak. You're always waiting for something to go wrong. You understand the pattern afterward but can't always catch it in the moment.

The question isn't only where it came from. It's what is happening, what keeps it going, and what you want to be different.

Understanding the past is useful when it helps us understand the present.

Old Patterns, Current Life

Something can make sense and still not work anymore.

Staying alert, keeping people happy, avoiding conflict, disconnecting, taking control, or handling everything yourself may have made sense in another context.

We can understand why a pattern exists without assuming you have to keep living around it.

What It Can Look Like

Trauma doesn't always look dramatic from the outside.

You can be capable, successful, and very aware of yourself while still getting pulled into reactions that feel hard to control or understand.

Always On

Reading the room, anticipating problems, startling easily, or having a hard time fully relaxing.

Shutting Down

Going blank, disconnecting, avoiding, freezing, or losing access to what you wanted to say.

Relationships

Difficulty with trust, conflict, closeness, boundaries, asking for things, or believing a relationship is secure.

Self-Protection

Overexplaining, people-pleasing, controlling, withdrawing, or trying to prevent problems before they happen.

Getting the Context Right

Not everything is trauma just because you have a trauma history.

Anxiety, ADHD, autism, OCD, depression, burnout, current relationships, and actual problems happening in your life can overlap with trauma.

We figure out what we're looking at before deciding what to do with it.

Therapy for Complex Trauma

Insight matters. So does what happens next.

Sometimes the work is connecting a current reaction to something you've lived through. Sometimes it's noticing what happens right before you shut down, changing a relationship pattern, setting a boundary, tolerating a feeling, or doing something differently.

We use the past when it's useful. Then we work with the life you're actually living.

Knowing why something happens is a start. It doesn't have to be the end of therapy.

Talking About What Happened

You don't have to tell me everything for us to do useful work.

Some people want to talk directly about what happened. Others want to start with how it's affecting them now. We don't need to force detail that isn't useful.

What We're Working Toward

What happened matters. It doesn't have to decide what happens next.

The goal isn't to erase what happened or become someone who never gets triggered.

It's having more room between what happened then and what you choose now.
